about the raidMu na RaideanHighland Wildcat is a purpose-built mountain bike course set in magnificent Highland scenery some 50 miles north of Inverness. Featuring both the longest singletrack climb and descent in the UK together with low level family trails - it is a cycling destination not to be missed. Highland Wildcat's 2008 event will be a 12 hour "Dawn Raid" held on the weekend of 28th/29th June. This is an 8pm-8am event, organised by the Strathpuffer team, and following a similar format with entries being solos, pairs or teams of four. Conditions will, however, be in contrast, with a very brief sunset, no mud and plenty of live music in the marquee to entertain participants and visitors through the night! Entry £25 on inclusive of weekend trail pass, camping area, marquee entry (live music) and parking. One set of fully charged lights should be sufficient as the night is short! The route will be on the Highland Wildcat trails inside the forest except for the first longer lap from Dunrobin Castle to the monument on Ben Bhraggie and down the black route. Adventure show likely to be in attendance. Prizes for various categories. Please contact Steve at info@squarewheels.biz for entries and further information. Numbers will be limited to 250 so entries asap recommended.

The festival was run over two days, with a programme of activities for under 16’s as well as sideshows and entertainment running alongside the main event. Red Poppy Catering were on site all weekend with hot food and hot and cold drinks, including real coffee! Hot food was available from breakfast onwards through the day with cooked breakfasts, pasta, chilli and a hog roast!

The route followed a mix of forest road and singletrack from the event base and through Dunrobin Wood, leading out past Kilmain Wood to Kilmain, where it joins a minor road for a short stint before returning to forest roads and singletrack along the side of Loch Brora. The trail follows the length of Loch Brora and continues through Strath Brora, turning just past Dalvaich across the River Brora and joining a minor road. From here, the route continues down the road on the side of Strath Brora and Loch Brora, returning to singletrack from Oldtown until joining a minor road leading back into Kilmain. The route leaves the road for forest tracks through Uppat Wood, and back through Dunrobin Wood and finally rejoins the Wildcat Trails taking you back down to the event base. Teams of two raced in a timed relay completing two laps each, with soloists each completing two laps of the same course. The course followed some of the Wildcat’s most demanding trails rising up to the Duke of Sutherland Monument and back over a 9.3K circuit. Riders aged over 16 taking part through their school competed over the 9K relay course on Ben Bhraggie, paired riders each completed 1 lap each of the course and were entered into the inter schools championship!
